Blast(s) from the Past

A few memories from the past have resurfaced in the past few days:

  • The Baltimore Ravens hosted the Indianapolis Colts in the NFL playoffs. Of course this is a sore topic for many Marylanders. The Colts played for 31 seasons in Baltimore before leaving in 1984. Their former players chose Baltimore over the Colts and became Ravens fans when Baltimore finally got an NFL team back. During their stay in Baltimore, the Colts won 3 NFL titles.

I don’t personally remember the Colts or the move, but if you grew up in Maryland, there’s no way to not have been told of what happened on March 29, 1984.

  • The Ravens honorary captain for the playoff game was Cal Ripken, Jr., who had just completed a a rookie of the year season in 1982 and an AL MVP / World Series Champion season in 1983 when the Colts left in 1984. Last Tuesday Cal was near-unanimously elected to the baseball Half of Fame.

  • The NFL Network is re-running telecasts of old Super Bowls. Over the weekend, they ran Super Bowl XXII, the Redskins thrashing of the Denver Broncos. This was the day I became a Redskins fan. Its funny that people keep saying the Redskins scored 35 points in only 5:47 in the 2nd quarter of that game. I think I should clarify that point. They didn’t score those points in a matter of 5:47 on the game clock. Their time of possesion for the 2nd quarter was 5:47 and they scored 35 points during that quarter. Even though I became a Redskins fan that day, my fonder memories are of Super Bowl XXVI. I was a little bit older and remember almost every game from that season.

  • The only non-sports-related memory. All the computers at work are being upgraded from Symantec Antivirus 9.0.3.1000 to SAV 10. Goodbye SAV 9.0.3.1000, I have many fond memories of you and the heartache you brought to my life. You touched my life in ways that I never imagined (or wanted for that matter).
